$1.3 billion AI buyout

PLUS: More Stability AI controversy

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, human brains. Welcome back to your daily munch of AI news.

Here’s what’s on the menu today:

  • Another Stability AI exec quits

Stability’s Head of Research, David Ha, has resigned.

  • $1.3 Billion AI buyout 💵

Databricks buys MosaicML for $1.3 billion.

APPETIZER

Stability AI may have an executive retention problem 🤦‍♂️

Stability AI’s Head of Research, David Ha, quit. COO Ren Ito also quit earlier this month.

More like Instability AI.

Ha hasn’t publicly given a reason, but Stability AI’s spokesperson commented on the subject:

“We can confim that David Ha has taken a break from employment at Stability AI for personal reasons.”

- Motez Bishara

How insightful…

CEO Emad Mostaque has a chronic habit of exaggerating big claims. And a former business partner has sued Mostaque for cutting him out of Stability equity. There’s also that copyright lawsuit from Getty…

Yikes.

Our take: Stability is going through it — lawsuits, execs bailing left and right, Midjourney v5.2 overshadowing SDXL 0.9. Trouble in paradise?

BUZZWORD OF THE DAY

Data warehouses are a way to store data in an organized way, usually used for business analysis and reporting.

Data lakes store all types of raw data in an unstructured way. Data lakes lend themselves towards a wide variety of data analysis tasks, ranging from dashboards & visualization to big data and machine learning.

Data Lakehouse: a combination of a warehouse and lake. Databricks’ Lakehouse combines the reliability, strong governance, and performance of the data warehouses with the flexibility and machine learning capabilities of the data lakes.

MAIN COURSE

Databricks announces $1.3 Billion MosaicML acquisition 🤑

Databricks has signed an agreement with MosaicML for $1.3 Billion. The strategy behind the big move: bring MosaicML’s advanced machine learning tech into Databricks’ data analytics ecosystem for faster and cheaper AI training.

Their last valuation was only $222 million.

MosaicML’s machine learning platform streamlines AI development with up to 7x faster training times. Both sides seem to share the same vision: making AI training more accessible.

“At MosaicML, we believe in a world where everyone is empowered to build and train their own models, imbued with their own opinions and viewpoints — and joing forces with Databricks will help us make that belief a reality.“

- Naveen Rao, CEO of MosaicML

Eventually, their goal is to drive the cost of training a generative AI model from millions of dollars into the thousands.

So what’s a few billy between friends, anyhow?

Our take: That’s a lot of dough. But word on the street is that the deal was done in stock, rather than cash — which could make the effective price much lower.
