MAIN COURSE

Your AI handcuffs kids for eating🔫

Last Monday, an AI security system flagged a student's Doritos bag as a firearm. 8 cop cars showed up. The company says the AI worked correctly.

What happened?

Taki Allen ate Doritos after football practice. Twenty minutes later, 8 cop cars rolled up with guns drawn. They forced him to his knees and handcuffed him. His crime? Snacking.

Why?

Kenwood High School uses Omnilert gun detection. It saw Allen holding Doritos and flagged it as a weapon. The AI couldn't tell snacks from firearms.

They said it worked correctly?

Yupp. The school security team canceled the alert, but nobody told the principal. She called the police.

Is he okay?

His grandfather said, “Nobody wants this to happen to their child.” The school offered counseling.

Are other schools using this?

Yes. Baltimore County deployed it last year. School security tech is growing 8.4% annually.

SIDE SALAD

Meta just fired 600 AI workers 🫣

Meta is cutting 600 roles in its AI division. But they're still hiring for the team building superintelligence.

Huh?

Meta is laying off around 600 employees from its AI team. The cuts hit FAIR (Meta's legacy AI research unit) and its AI product/infrastructure divisions.

Why?

Meta AI head Alexandr Wang says fewer people means faster decisions and “more scope and impact” per person.

Didn't Meta just go on a hiring spree?

Yes. Over the summer, Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and hired CEO Alexandr Wang. They paused hiring months later and announced this restructuring.

Can fired employees stay at Meta?

They can apply for other roles internally. No guarantees.
