APPETIZER

Stanford engineers solve social anxiety 😎

Students at Stanford (surprise) just built lifeOS: AR glasses that use GPT-4 to prompt you with talking points in any conversation.

AR glasses prompting a talking point

How it works:

1/ The camera on the glasses scans for a face, then internally identifies the person you’re speaking to (from data you’ve fed to it before).

2/ It goes through all your digital conversations with them to find relevant points to talk about with GPT-4.

3/ The glasses listen for how the conversation continues and continue to provide social aid with witty one-liners and nuanced replies.

BUZZWORD OF THE DAY

Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

Detecting words and transcribing words from images. The words can be typed, handwritten, or printed. Used in text-detection AI products. Examples in the wild: Evernote, Google Translate, and other document scanning apps.

MAIN COURSE

Elon Musk’s new AI company 🚀

Elon Musk is officially taking OpenAI head-on with his newest venture, X.AI Corp.

According to credible sources, the CEO (of now eight companies?) has been assembling a team of AI experts for the startup, which is allegedly part of a wider plan to create an everything app under the brand X.

The Nevada-listed company was incorporated in secrecy a month ago, with Musk listed as its sole director and ex-Morgan Stanley VP Jared Birchall as secretary.

Let’s recap: Musk has a bit of a complicated history with AI. He co-founded OpenAI and pledged $1B eight years ago, then left in 2018. Ever since he’s been critical of the org and emphasizing the need for safer models. He also inflated the price of GPUs by buying 10,000 of them earlier this month.

With X, Musk is diving headfirst into the world of AI development again. We don’t know what products the startup’s looking to create just yet, but with Elon’s track record and massive capital, it’s on track to be disruptive.

SIDE DISH

AI music takes off 🎙️

Music producer Ghostwriter just dropped a track featuring Drake and The Weeknd with AI models on the mic, and the likeliness is uncanny.

Ghostwriter announces the drop.

It’s got over a million Tiktok likes and garnered 300k+ streams on Spotify before being taken down a few hours ago. If you’re a Drake stan, check out the whole track here. The song hits.

public consensus summed up

Our take: regulation’s going to come at AI music strong, but we’ve opened Pandora’s box - AI tracks are about to carve out an industry of their own as the edge artists have on distribution starts getting fragile. But also: this means hyper-personalized playlists and mashups from your favorite artists are also right around the corner. Music’s about to music a whole lot harder.
