Yesterday, University of Michigan researchers introduced Factorized Diffusion. It uses a pretrained diffusion model to generate optical illusions.

Optical Illusions? 🤔

What kind of optical illusions?

  • Hybrid images — makes images that look different depending on viewing distance or size.

  • Color hybrids — changes appearance with color manipulation.

  • Motion Hybrids — changes appearance with motion blur. They combine motion-blurred and residual image parts.

  • Hybrids from real images — involves splitting and recombining image parts.

  • Triple Hybrids — based on three prompts. They use a manually adjusted Laplacian pyramid.

How does it work?

Factorized Diffusion splits an image into elements such as color and detail, with text prompts shaping each part. As it reduces noise during creation, it crafts 'hybrid images' that change appearance with distance and lighting, producing complex visual illusions.

Eye would throw in an eye joke, but iris-k it being too cornea… 👁️
