šŸ§  Microsoft VS NVIDIA

PLUS: AI salad chefs

Good morning human brains, welcome back to your daily munch of AI news.

Hereā€™s whatā€™s on the menu today:

  • AI salad chefs šŸ„—

Salad chain, Sweetgreen, opened an AI-automated kitchen and plans to open more.

  • Microsoft & AMD vs NVIDIA šŸ†

The AI chip wars begin. Microsoft and AMD team up to take on NVIDIAā€™s market share.

  • Amazonā€™s AI ad strategy šŸ’ø

Amazon is beginning to incorporate AI advertising on its platforms in many different ways.

APPETIZER

AI automated food šŸ„—

Do you have any gluten-free AI?

Wednesday, we discussed Wendyā€™s partnering with Google to create a drive-thru chatbot.

Now, Sweetgreen has opened up its first AI kitchen in Naperville Illinois.

Sweetgreen aims to create a "frictionless experience." Salads are assembled on an AI-monitored conveyor belt, with precise portions and accuracy, promising faster service.

Sweetgreenā€™s AI kitchen

The process, however, isn't entirely human-free. A host greets customers, assisting them through the order process, and a staff member adds the final touches to the salads.

They claim this tech could cut labor costs and increase throughput. While they're quiet on the exact number of staff needed, they say it'll provide "a better, more dynamic job for our team members".

Our Take: The moment a salad bot can replace a job, that role will be tossed out like yesterdayā€™s lettuce. Sweetgreenā€™s ā€œefficiencyā€œ is just code for ā€˜cutting labor costs.ā€˜

Good news for salad lovers. Bad news for the job market.

MAIN COURSE

The AI chip wars begin āš”ļø

Microsoft is reportedly assisting AMD in its venture into AI processors aiming to challenge NVIDIAā€™s dominant 80% market share in the industry.

Here are the highlights:

1/ AMD's CEO, Lisa Su, announced AI as their top strategic priority, with plans for customized chips for AI data centers.

2/ There are rumors that AMD is aiding Microsoft with its own AI chips, codenamed ā€œAthena,ā€ though Microsoft publicly denies this.

3/ Microsoft is reportedly providing AMD with engineering resources to bolster AI processor development.

4/ AMD's upcoming Instinct MI300 chip is anticipated to be well-suited for generative AI workloads.

AMDā€™s CEO announcing M1300 AI chip

Despite the partnership, Microsoft continues to seek more Nvidia processors, highlighting Nvidia's prevailing industry dominance.

What this means: This Microsoft-AMD partnership could herald new dynamics in the AI chip market, potentially challenging Nvidia's stronghold and driving innovation in AI hardware.

A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA

Amazonā€™s AI advertising leap šŸš€

In a bid to diversify its rapidly growing ad business, Amazon is reportedly building a team to develop AI tools for generating photos and videos for merchant advertising.

Butā€¦ is it next-day delivery?

With Microsoft integrating ads into Bingā€™s chatbox responses and Google announcing AIā€™s integration in all their products at Google I/O 2023; Amazon is positioning itself to compete by leveraging AI in its advertising endeavors.

Hereā€™s the scoop:

1/ Amazonā€™s new team will focus on AI tools capable of generating media for advertising campaigns

2/ These efforts follow Amazonā€™s booming ad business, which netted $38 billion last year.

3/ Amazon will sell spots on Freevee and Prime Video, along with audio ads on Amazon Music and digital ads in Amazon Fresh stores.

What this means: This move by Amazon, following Google and Microsoft, signals a growing trend of leveraging AI in digital advertising. Itā€™s still early on, but this could reshape advertising as we know it, making it much more personalized and effective.
