Robot chauffeurs? 🤖 🚗

Last week, University of Tokyo researchers published a paper on Musashi. It’s a humanoid robot that can drive autonomously.

What is it?

It’s a robot equipped with cameras, microphones, sensors, and more. Its AI learns the more it drives, reacts to its environment, obeys traffic lights, avoids hazards, and more.

How does it work?

It leverages artificial muscles to steer, push down on the pedals, and adjust its movements using feedback sensors.

Will it run me over?

In tests, Musashi braked when it saw a human, heard a car horn, and more. It checked side mirrors, pulled the handbrake when parking, used turn signals, and more.

What’s up with the car?

It’s called the COMS. It’s a tiny, electric car launched by Toyota in 2012. This one has a PC and a Wi-Fi router to power Musashi and run its recognition module.

So I can give up driving?

Nah. Musashi’s AI wasn’t trained on inclines. It struggles with maintaining a constant speed up hills, turning corners, and many other basic driving tasks.
