ChatGPT for Business

PLUS: StabilityAI's open-source LLM

Good morning human brains, welcome back to your daily munch of AI news.

Here’s what’s on the menu today:

  • StabilityAI’s Language Model 🤖
StabilityAI just dropped StableVicuna: an open-source chatbot trained with human feedback.

  • OpenAI Means Business + New Privacy Laws 💸

OpenAI released ChatGPT business: a new tier for pros & businesses + announced new privacy laws.

  • Snapchat’s Stock is crashing 📉

Snapchat Stock is down 24% after the MyAI slump.

StabilityAI chatbots are here 🤖

Yup, it’s another big release from StabilityAI, the same company we wrote about yesterday for their new image generation model Floyd. Today they entered the LLM game with StableVicuna.

Here’s what’s new:

1/ It’s using ChatGPT’s training data + a 13 billion parameter LLaMA model.

2/ This is the world’s first large-scale model that’s using human feedback to train (using RLHF).

3/ Its code is open-source (at least technically - LLM fans say it’s not really open-source if most of your model is built on other models that are closed)

Vicuna is comparable to ChatGPT on most metrics. It’ll do the basics very well: text generation, simple math functions, and writing elementary code. StabilityAI says it’s about to come out with a chat interface very soon, but you can play with it now on their Discord.

What this means: open-source chatbots built on other bots tend to be worse overall, but diversification is the name of the game and this is StabilityAI telling the world it’s not trying to be just another image generation org.

OpenAI cannot stop shipping 🚢

OpenAI just announced a new subscription tier tailored to enterprise and professionals - ChatGPT Business.

This is for pros that want more control over their data & companies looking to manage thousands of users. OpenAI hasn’t revealed what it’ll look like yet, but we know it’ll follow standard data policy, which means that user data won't be used to train its models - at least by default.

Sam Altman, 5 days after ChatGPT’s release

This comes only a few weeks after the $20 ChatGPT Plus tier’s launch & a slew of new business partnerships… what’s with the sudden rush to monetize?

ChatGPT is a pricey service to run. According to CEO Sam Altman, ChatGPT's operating expenses amount to a few cents per chat in total compute costs (+ this is multiples higher for GPT4).

One more thing: following Italy’s original footsteps, France, Spain, and Germany have begun probing OpenAI and its commercial services too, focusing on ChatGPT's GDPR adherence.

In response, OpenAI just dropped new privacy features for all ChatGPT users. Here’s what’s new:

1/ Conversations started with your chat history disabled won't be used to train OpenAI models.

2/ Your conversations will be saved for 30 days but reviewed only "when needed to monitor for abuse."

3/ You can now export your chat data. Just request it to be sent in a file to the email address associated with your account.

Take: the speed at which OpenAI is responding to the market and shipping new features is unimagined, and this is with a tight team of 375 (for reference, Google’s and Microsoft’s AI teams are 5,000 and 7,000 big).
