On Friday, Jan Leike resigned from OpenAI. He claims the reasons were insufficient resources, distrust in OpenAI’s leadership, and more.

Who is Jan Leike?

He was the Head of Alignment, a Superalignment Lead, and Executive at OpenAI. He developed InstructGPT, the first RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) language model, and more.

Why did he resign?

He said it was due to disagreements on core priorities until it “reached a breaking point.” He stressed the need for more focus and resources on AI safety and securing computational power for research.

What were the disagreements?

Leike disagreed with OpenAI prioritizing products over becoming a safety-first AGI developer.

Why do I care?

It highlights the urgent need for prioritizing safety and ethics in AI development to ensure responsible and secure technological advancement.

Didn’t lots of other people leave OpenAI?

Jersey Shore: OpenAI edition 🤷‍♀️ 💅

On Sunday, Open AI paused ChatGPT’s Sky voice. It was taken down due to concerns that it sounded like Scarlett Johansson.

What happened?

They disabled Sky’s voice, and released a blog saying that the 5 ChatGPT’s voices were selected from a pool of 400 paid voice actors. It claims the similarity to Scarlett Johansson was purely a “coincidence.”

So, why did they take it down?

Scarlett Johansson is threatening OpenAI with legal action. She claims they copied her voice without her permission. She said Sam Altman asked her to be the voice of ChatGPT, and when she turned him down, he copied her voice anyway.

If a pig loses its voice… Is it disgruntled? 🐷
