Today's vibe: David stones Goliath.

Buckle up, we're about to take off 💺

Scan 3D objects with your iPhone 🏈

A Neural Radiance Field aka NeRF is a machine learning technique that represents 3D objects by modeling light from a variety of angles.

Creating these models can be extremely time-consuming and expensive, but leads to hyper-realistic results. It's the reason video game companies will hire photographers to drive into the middle of the desert to take pictures of rocks.

Now that Luma Labs has released their NeRF scanning technology as an app on the app-store you can do the same thing with your iPhone.

Our Predictions 🔮

  • More hyper-realism in the indie-gaming space. Democratizing this technology makes it much more accessible for small dev-teams to incorporate into their workflows. 🎮

  • 3D reaction gifs and stickers. If it's fun to turn your friend's face into a WhatsApp sticker it will be even more fun to turn them into a virtual puppet. 🎭

The Stack counterpunches GitHub Copilot 🥊

Copilot, GitHub's code-generation tool which auto-completes your code for you, has faced controversy for re-purposing users' code without attribution or compensation.

The Stack is an open-source collection of 3.1 TB of source code in 30 programming languages trained on GPT-2 models.

Unlike Copilot, The Stack abides by the terms of the original licenses.

Insights 🔮

  • Someone is going to launch a hosted version to compete head-on with Copilot. Why not you?

  • Are models trained on copyright-protected data liable to lawsuits? Too soon to call. Expect the fight to be bloody as the next few years we see cases brought and tried.

Byte-sized bonus treats 😋

Until next time ✌️
