Your TODO list will do itself

PLUS: Google 2.0

Good morning human brains, welcome back to your daily munch of AI news.

APPETIZER

AutoGPT is all the rage 🍾

AutoGPT is exploding in popularity. It’s an AI-powered tool that supercharges GPT-4 by fully automating workflows. Play with it here.

First time hearing about it? No sweat, here’s what you need to know:

1/ It’s a TODO list that completes itself.

You give AutoGPT an end goal and it figures out the rest, including manipulating files, browsing the web, and doing whatever else it takes to get the job done.

2/ It’s flexible.

AutoGPT remembers what you tell it. It preserves the context of your task and can fetch previous responses to make better decisions.

Developers have used AutoGPT to build complex websites, analyze investment opportunities, and create podcasts from scratch.

3/ It’s open-source.

Feeling boxed in by the hosted version? Here’s how to set up a self-hosted version yourself.

Why it matters:

GPT4 is a really cool text generator fairly limited in practical applications. Self-prompting agents like AutoGPT are potentially unlimited in their applications.

AutoGPT (and AI systems like it) are a major stepping stone to full automation and perhaps even ”godlike” AGI.

BUZZWORD OF THE DAY

Heuristic

An educated guess. AI algorithms use heuristics to arrive at near-optimal solutions as fast as possible. A good heuristic will point in the direction of the right answer while being extremely fast to calculate.

Think of it like navigating by landmarks. You don’t need turn-by-turn directions to navigate Paris as long as you can see the Eiffel tower in the distance and walk towards it.

MAIN COURSE

Google’s AI search engine 🚂

Google is building an AI-enhanced search engine (code-named Magi) to offer a far more personalized search experience.

Magi will use a conversational approach to search and learn from your previous searches to optimize results integrating AI images and recommend topics you might want to dive more into too.

Google has been working on a suite of AI tools (on track to hit a million users next month) including:

1/ A Duolingo competitor (codename Tivoli Tutor).

2/ An AI image generator called GIFI.

3/ A Chrome chatbot to answer questions about the page you’re on.

Google is now in the strange position of playing catch-up to Bing AI.

This new push to integrate AI with Search comes after Microsoft integrated ChatGPT into Bing and Samsung announced that it’s looking at making Bing the default search provider on all its phones.

Take: Google got taken by surprise by ChatGPT, but it’s still an AI behemoth. The beast is now fully awake and moving aggressively to regain its lead.

SIDE DISH

Update: Elon’s AI company is Twitter ✖️

Yesterday we wrote about Elon Musk buying up GPUs and registering a mysterious corporate entity called “X”. Eight minutes after we sent that email, Elon made his big reveal:

Email Twitter sent to all users yesterday.

What this means: there isn’t much to deduce just yet, but Elon’s mentioned plans for pivoting Twitter to an everything app (like WeChat in China) before. It’s going to be interesting to see how AI plays into his immediate plans.
