MAIN COURSE

Elon Musk vs. Sam Altman 🧑‍🚀 🔥

Last Thursday, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. Musk claims OpenAI illegally deviated from its founding principal of developing AI for the public good.

How is that illegal?

Elon Musk says OpenAI initially received funding as a non-profit with a mission to develop AI to help humanity. He claims it’s transformed into a “closed-source, de facto subsidiary” of Microsoft.

What does this mean?

He says it’s like a non-profit that was funded to save the rainforest that turns into a lumber company that makes tons of money selling the trees it chopped.

Why Elon?

He donated over $44 million to OpenAI in 2015 based on the promise that it would combat AI threats through open-sourced advancements to aid humanity.

Does Elon want money from this lawsuit?

He wants the courts to rule that advanced models can’t be exclusively controlled by corporations. He also wants OpenAI to only create open-source AI that aids humankind.

Here’s a 2015 email presented as evidence:

I want more juice on Elon Musk.

Pucker up. Back in May, we reported on Neuralink’s FDA approval. It was officially cleared to test its brain-computer interface on humans.

In July, we covered xAI’s Live Twitter event. Elon Musk announced that xAI would collaborate with Tesla, use Twitter data for training, and more.

In November, we reported on Grok. It’s xAI’s LLM that uses real-time world knowledge to answer questions, assist with coding, and more.

Last month, we covered Neuralink’s first successful human brain implant. Elon Musk announced the patient is recovering well, and the results are promising.

SIDE SALAD

Turn photos into realistic videos 🎥 🍿

Last Tuesday, Alibaba announced EMO. It’s a video generation model that creates complete, vivid talking head videos from a single photo.

“Why so serious?” 🤡

How does it work?

You upload a photo and a sound clip, and EMO creates a video with precise mouth shapes, head movements, and more. It works for speaking and singing videos and adapts to realistic photos, anime, 3D, and a wide range of other styles.

Is it better than Runway or Leonardo’s photo-to-video tools?

EMO significant outperforms these in terms of expressiveness, realism, consistency, and more. It especially excels in maintaining the character’s identity throughout the entirety of the video.

Sweet. What’s under the hood?

EMO uses a deep neural network with diffusion models. It parses acoustic features and uniquely generates videos without the use of predefined animations.

Alibaba’s AI seems dope. I want to learn more.

Lucky you. Back in August, we covered two AI models from Alibaba. Qwen-VL and Qwen-VL-Chat are multimodal, vision-language models.

A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA

Should you fire your accountant? 🤑 💵

Last Thursday, Microsoft unveiled Copilot for Finance. It’s an AI model designed to enhance the efficiency of finance professionals.

What does it do?

Microsoft claims it reduces time spent on routine tasks and allows you to concentrate on strategic initiatives. You can turn data into visual presentations, automate reconciliation processes, and more.

Does it integrate with other financial systems?

Yes, it draws data from Microsoft Dynamics 365, SAP, Microsoft Graph, and more. It leverages these to perform tasks like generating invoices, flagging discrepancies, and more.

Is it any good?

We haven’t tried it, but some early adopters include Visa, Northern Trust, and more. Visa’s CIO, Don Hobson, claims it will “transform the ways in which we work and how we service our clients.”
